Arthur Mathisen actually outrode multisport überbiker David Thompson – 1:22:34 to 1:23:46 over Powerman Alabama’s tough 53km bike ride. But Thompson’s race-best 26:20 first 8km run and 27:13 closing 8km was enough to give the defending champion from St. Paul, Minnesota, a 2:18:16 finish and a 3-minute, 6-seconds margin of victory over runner-up Mathisen Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama.
Last year’s amateur national and world champion - now first year pro - Amy Kloner of Atlanta put in a big lead over nearby Greystone Ridge, Alabama favorite Deanna Frank on the bike and held on for a 2 minute 11 second margin of victory in 2:39:42. Frank failed to make an expected surge on the run when she injured her foot.
"It's disappointing," Frank told The Birmingham News, "but when something like that happens, I start thinking about my other races for the rest of the year. I don't want to be out for the rest of the season."
"I didn't expect to win," Kloner told The Birmingham News. "I just hoped to leave with some dignity."
Kloner, Frank and third place Bianca Simpson of Chester Springs, Pennsylvania, overcame 4:00 minute penalties for inadvertently missing 3/10ths of a mile of the run course. The penalties did not affect the first three places, but Gail Kattouf, of Greenville, South Carolina, who also missed some of the run course and was penalized 4:00, dropped to fifth behind behind Brooke Harris of Silver City, New Mexico.
